Peter grew up in Birmingham, Central England and studied at Moseley School of Art
and Birmingham College of Art
He then went on to become an Art teacher and then Head of Art in a local school

12 years ago Peter decided to specialise in printmaking and developing
his own artwork,
and eventually gave up teaching to concentrate on his art

In recent years his work has been selected for several 'open exhibitions' around the UK
such as :

Royal Society of Painters, Etchers and Engravers      Open print exhibition       1990
Royal West of England Academy                                  Open print exhibition  1994/ 96
Society of Wood Engravers                             Open touring exhibitions   1994/ 95/ 96
Laing Exhibition     - Birmingham and London                                                    1996
Mid-Art Dudley                                                                                 1995/ 96/ 97
Manchester Academy Open         1992/ 93/ 96/ 99
and in 1999, winning the 'Landmark Financial Services Award for 2 prints

Also in recent years Peter has completed several 'public art' commisions

1990/ 91   Commissioned by Dudley MBC to design five decorative panels
12 feet by 4.5 feet for Foster Street subway, Stourbridge
The designs were provided as 3 color woodcuts
which were enlarged and enamelled on steel

1997         Commisioned by Midland Metro to design 7 glass panels
featuring local landscapes, for tram shelters in the West Midlands
these were provided as sceen printed glass panels

Throughout the last 10 years Peter has been consistently involved in one or 2 man
exhibitions around the country, developing, showing and selling his woodcut prints

Original modern woodcut prints, pictures of rural landscapes for home decor

These woodcuts are made by drawing a design on a wood block, and then cutting away the background
with a knife and gouges.
The finished block is then inked with a roller and printed in a hand press by the artist
For color prints such as these above, a separate block is carved for each color
These are then printed in sequence one color over another until the image is complete
and acceptable to the artist
To overlay two colors to provide a third, a transparent medium is added to the ink
and this technique is also used by the artist            ** contact artist **

I try to combine the decorative and topographical aspects of landscape
to produce a strong image....Peter Shread
