Although painting has a history steeped in portraiture,
and this is important to me in my research,
I do not see my work as portraits
I see them as more akin to a masks,
because of their ageless and androgynous qualities
An individuals space is a mask that is presented to the world
The person reveals or conceals
as much or as little as they desire
and I attempt to reveal some of these secrets
My paintings are of human faces that is true
but some are compiled from the features of more than one subject
My interest is not in capturing the true likeness of the human face
but rather in suggesting the psychological inferences
behind the facade that is presented to society
The choice of oil on canvas is essential to the finished image
The malleability of the oil allows me to build thin glazes of colour
devoid of brushstrokes or evidence of mark making
This re-inforces the unreal nature of the final image
