Ilona is more widely known in Central England for her publicly sited mosaic work,
and for designing and implementing mosaic projects for schools and community
groups under her direction.
She also undertakes private commissions and produces smaller mosaic works for
interior display, and artwork suitable for homes and gardens.
Originally a painter and sculptor, having 'discovered' mosaic in 1993, Ilona works
with a variety of materials including Italian vitrified glass tessarae, unglazed ceramic
tiles from Portugal, pebbles, mirror, metal artefacts and broken crockery which she
uses in her pictures as an alternative to paint. She is particularly fond of the
challenges
inherent in reforming and reusing domestic crockery set in grout to produce a lively
textured surface to the work, which reflects and bounces both natural and artificial
light.
The materials used by Ilona in specific works are dictated by practical
considerations
such as the intended use or siting of the mosaic - mural, flooring, sculpture, planter,
mirror, table, fountain, wall panel, interior or exterior.
The mosaics she has agreed to make available through 'The Dream Gallery' at this
time
are intended for interior display only, all items being designed and handcrafted by the
artist herself.
Born and educated in Scotland, Ilona moved to the Midlands with her husband over
30 years ago. Her equally creative three daughters are now grown up and specialising
in ceramics, fashion design and theatre.
Although now based in a more urban environment, Ilona has retained her love and
respect for our natural world. Her work with youngsters often draws attention to the
wonder and beauty of both plants and other living creatures - including the tiny life
forms so often unnoticed, but worthy of portraying in mosaic!
