It is probably more noticeable to me than anyone,
but my work has evolved over the last 10 years
It seems to have reached a new level of maturity and focus
and expresses more confidence and technical refinement
Changes in my work now seem slight refinements
as I aim to get close to that untouchable perfection
The surface and mark making is a strong aspect of my work
I have always been interested in painting, and continue to paint and collage
which is useful and feeds my ceramic work with new imagery
The forms I make have always been deliberately two dimensional
having a back and a front, helping to emphasise the surface imagery
There could be some truth in saying that for me
forms are basically three dimensional canvases
that can be pierced, scratched, drawn on, painted and coloured
Mark making possibilities seem endless with clay
and this, I suppose, is my fascination
Form and surface in my work is inspired by different sources
but the landscape is especially influential
particularly coastal and industrial landscapes
I take many photographs of these areas
and will then produce paintings or collages
I try to combine the near and far to give
a powerful sense of scale in a piece of work
I aim to evoke the feeling and spirit of the places I visit
rather than give direct references to them
